After waiting for it for a while, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, is finally available in the West. In case you didn’t know, this is an installment of the hit Octopath Traveler designed for iPhone and Android devices. This release was a real success in Japan and now wants to conquer a larger audience.
For many players the latter matters little and Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent has a big problem: it is a mobile game. This is natural, after all, Octopath Traveler it’s a game that hit the console crowd and mobile games are usually about microtransactions and absurdly simplified gameplay.
However, the above does not mean that Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent be a bad game. Recently at LEVEL UP we had the opportunity to interview Hirohito Suzuki, global producer of Champions of the Continent. In our talk, he revealed to us that they designed this new installment with fun in mind.
In case you missed it: some users were able to play Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent before its premiere.
In our discussion, we told Suzuki that many console gamers underestimate mobile titles. He told us that it is something they took into account when making Champions of the Continentwhich is why they struggled to deliver a quality product.
“We understand the concern that mobile gaming is often underrated. This is why we focus on maintaining a high quality and narrative experience. For example, about the performances during the events, the unique movements of the pixel characters are more than those of [Octopath Traveler].
Games should be fun; I think that’s it. Being a mobile game more people will have the opportunity to play it and that is why we spent several hours creating the story, systems, graphics and music to be able to deliver an experience comparable to a console game”, Suzuki said before telling us that many gamers of Japan connect their mobile to the TV when playing Champions of the Continent.

What about monetization in Champions of the Continent?
Monetization is one of the most controversial issues of current releases, especially those that are free-to-play and reach cell phones. A clear example is Diablo Immortal, a game that has been harshly criticized for having monetization systems that fans perceive as abusive.
So how do you monetize Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent? Does he do it in ways that respect the player? We asked Suzuki about it, and he told us that it’s a gacha style, but that it puts the fun of the player above all else.
“The monetization revolves around the gacha, allowing players to get characters. However, as mentioned above, this title is focused on delivering an RPG experience, so we haven’t made any balance adjustments that require paying to progress the main story.
Instead of having a gigantic wall (to overcome) that a certain character needs to pay for, we have sought a type of design where players first fall in love with the gameplay of the title and are also attracted to the monetization aspects due to to the presence of attractive characters,” he explained.
