Half a thousand participants from civil society organizations participate in Washington this Wednesday at the opening of the 53rd General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) under the motto “Strengthening a culture of democratic responsibility with human rights.”
The forum of representatives of civil society opens the curtain on the first official discussion of the plenary, when the representatives of the permanent missions to the OAS and the observer countries will install the plenary this afternoon.
On Thursday, the foreign ministers of the countries of the region, 24 confirmed, take their seats for this meeting of the highest authority of the OAS meeting at the headquarters of the hemispheric organization in Washington.
The appointment also highlights important absences of foreign ministers such as those of Mexico, Argentina, Bolivia, among others, who would show some differences with the meeting. However, the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, has said that “although there are differences”, the spirit of understanding prevails in the great issues of the region.
The assistant secretary of the OAS, Nestor Meléndez, said in the prelude to the meeting that “we hope to be able to convene a General Assembly with broad participation and solid high-level debates.”
The official added that “the General Secretariat processed 518 registration requests from civil society organizations, worker organizations, the private sector, and other social actors,” which are part of this event in Washington.
All the debates that begin this day and conclude on Friday with a resolution of the plenary session of the General Assembly will be in a hybrid format, some participations will take effect through online presentations, others will be held in person in the OAS main room. .
