The Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U only has exactly 1 week left to live. On March 27, 2023, these digital stores will stop operating and with them will go all the games that can still be purchased and downloaded. This means that it will no longer be possible to get digital games for these consoles and many of them will be lost, reason enough for a youtuber to buy them all and not be lost forever.
We are talking about one of the most important icons of the video game content creation scene, Jirard Khalil, better known as The Completionist, characterized by completely finishing the games.
This time around, The Completionist made a splash because he set out to buy and download all the games on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U before the digital store ceased to operate. We’re talking about all the games, not just the exclusive titles for these platforms, which includes those that can be obtained in physical format (as well as DSiWare, Virtual Console and all the DLC).

The Completionist achieved its mission of preserving 3DS and Wii U
It all started months ago, when it was announced that Nintendo would close these virtual stores. Khalil and his team put together lengthy spreadsheets to sort out all the games they needed to download and the money and storage space they would cost.
The bad news is that Khalil reports that when he searched for some games on his list, they were no longer available because the companies responsible for publishing them on these digital stores had already withdrawn them, perhaps because they knew that the closure of the platforms was coming. approached.
Fortunately, The Completionist got this just in time, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t extremely tiring, complicated, and full of obstacles that put the mission at risk.
Nintendo put several obstacles in the preservation of 3DS and Wii U video games
Curiously, whenever preservation is talked about, Nintendo is usually present, for the worse. And this was no exception, albeit indirectly.
The first problem was getting all the cards to add funds to the Nintendo eShop account. This was not Nintendo’s problem, but the lock was to avoid not buying more than a certain amount per day. Despite contacting the company’s support team, there was no favorable response, so the purchase had to be done in parts.
The most outrageous thing was the impossibility of downloading all the games on a single Wii U or Nintendo 3DS system, since there is a limit of icons or blocks in the system despite having more storage space, so it was tedious. having to fill up the console and then move it to the hard drive or SD card to re-download more games.
In case you missed it: foundation criticized Nintendo for hindering the preservation of video games.
All this without mentioning the terrible navigation and search in the Nintendo eShop, that it is not possible to separate the trailers and the games from the searches.
In the end, 866 Wii U games and 1,547 Nintendo 3DS titles were downloaded, which translates to 1.2 TB and 267 GB of games (or 2,136,689 blocks), respectively. All of this required 329 days, 464 play money cards for the Nintendo eShop, the money spent purely on game purchases was $22,791 USD.
All this for what? Just preservation?
Sure, the video of this great feat got clicks on The Completionist’s channel, but this content creator did it mainly for the preservation of video games. This is not news to The Completionist, rather he has dedicated time and effort to this cause for a good part of his life.
“Lost content is very real when it comes to game preservation since the industry’s inception, we are at daily risk of losing games forever, that’s why it matters and that’s why I’ve been a longtime supporter of [organizaciones] non-profit,” said Khalil, who praised the Video Game History Foundation and other such organizations.
In fact, the ultimate goal of this feat is to donate the consoles and the storage with the downloaded games to this foundation to help in the preservation tasks, a task that requires effort and money, which is why fundraising events are appreciated. through donations, such as the Preserved Play, which will be organized by Khalil on April 15 and 16 through his twitch channel.
