After the award ceremony in the national stage of the Copa Cervezas de América, held on August 13 in Valdivia, Bastián Araya, founder of the Nothus brewery, tells how he experienced the moment of classification and about the medals obtained.
The name of Nothus, explains Bastián Araya, arises when he was in Patagonia, in Torres del Paine, surrounded by coigües, lengas and nothofagus-type trees. In Chile this group of trees has 10 species, among the best known are the oak, lengas and rauíles, Bastián named the Nothus brewery, in tribute to these trees that captivated his gaze in the south of the country and that, inspired by them, he decided to make beers as captivating as the native forests themselves.
The founder of Nothus says that they have participated twice in the Copa Cervezas de América and 3 times in other contests, this has given them experience to improve, which was noticeable this year, since they managed to get all their participating beers, except one, get recognition.
The Cup is held within the framework of the FIC 22-09 project “Strengthening the management of business nodes of regional products”, financed by the Innovation Fund for Competitiveness (FIC) of the Regional Government of Los Ríos and its Regional Council and executed by the San Sebastián University (Valdivia Campus).
What Nothus Brewing Company of Valdivia did was not minor, as it obtained a silver medal with its Magnitude 9.5 beer and bronze with Amanita RED. In addition, five other beers from its preparation qualified for the second round in October.
“Obtaining the medals and qualifying makes us very happy, since, in one way or another, it shows that the processes are well done, that the knowledge we have is correct, so we are very happy about that” said Araya.
Currently there are five people in charge of the Brewery and together they planned that the beers sent to the national stage would be as fresh as possible to compete. “It was a job of two months of preparation, removing defects, the cold chain was respected and without a doubt, that in Valdivia we have very good quality water for beer production.”
“Obtaining the medals gives us a reputation that the beer we prepare here is of quality. It helps us so that new people get to know us” explains Bastián. On average, the brewery produces an average of 3,000 to 3,500 and 4,500 liters at its maximum monthly production.
The founder of Nothus anticipates that important projects are coming for the brewery, since his plan is to build a beer bar in its current location in Valdivia, on Calle Santa María #686, just an 8-minute walk from the city center.
