Released in 1979, Mad Max changed post-apocalyptic futures forever. Now, with the release of Furiosa, it is a good time to revisit its pronounced cinematographic influence.
When talking about sagas born during the 80s, it is inevitable not to resort to classics like Ghostbusters, Back to the Future or Indiana Jones.
Sometimes, one of the most influential of all is unfairly forgotten, by far: Mad Max. Okay, the first part premiered in 1979, but it was during the next decade that the franchise really exploded.
Since then, The style, aesthetics and concept of Mad Max has been copied in video games, comics and, of course, also movies. Now that Furiosa is back, it is a good time to know which films have been clearly inspired by this saga that are most worthwhile.
Carnal love (2016)
A strange and very author’s film, which went relatively unnoticed despite having the stellar appearances of Jim CarreyJason Momoa or Keanu Reeves. The influence of the Mad Max saga on it is beyond doubt, especially due to its mix between western and science fiction.
In a typical post-apocalyptic future, a young woman must travel and try to survive in a wasteland full of strange people. Curious, of course.
Waterworld (1995)
In 1995, Kevin Costner decided to change the futuristic roads for the sea, but maintaining the aesthetics and concept of Mad Max. In fact, the similarities between this and Waterworld are obvious from start to finish. Furthermore, the film was frankly controversial, because it cost a fortune and did not achieve the expected success.
Despite everything, it cannot be said that it is bad, as a classic adventure film, it knows how to maintain its type. Although perhaps it lacked originality, given what we have seen.
Messenger from the Future (1997)
Not happy with the failure that Waterworld was, Kevin Costner returned to the fray with Messenger from the Future, another attempt at a futuristic and dystopian western with a marked resemblance to Mad Max. Could it be that the Dances with Wolves actor is really enthusiastic about the saga?
The film was not the absolute disaster that it was criticized at the time (critics destroyed it mercilessly), but it was certainly a bit pretentious. Another hallmark every time Kevin Costner gets behind and in front of the cameras.
1997: Rescue in New York (1981)
Released just two years after Mad Max, John Carpenter decided to trade the steampunk wastelands for a futuristic city. From 1997, nothing more and nothing less!
The result was an action film that has stood the test of time and is today considered cult. Another of the great classics of the 80s.
Doomsday: Judgment Day (2008)
Another film clearly influenced by Mad Max, only without Furiosa but with the attractive British actress Rhona Mitra as the protagonist.
Car chases (and the way they are tuned), The action sequences, the aesthetics of the characters, everything is reminiscent of Mad Max in this entertaining production that is set after a lethal pandemic.
In short, the influence of Mad Max on popular culture is enormous, and at the time even rock bands deliberately copied its aesthetics. Sometimes, it doesn’t hurt to remember it, especially when a new release in the saga arrives.
