Accuses Washington of “providing a nuclear umbrella” to third countries
Oct. 12 (EUROPA PRESS) –
North Korea’s ambassador to the United Nations, Kim Song, accused the United States government on Wednesday of “aggravating” the situation around the Korean peninsula with its military maneuvers, which it carries out together with South Korean forces.
Kim has thus requested during a session of the first committee of the UN General Assembly that the United States “stop providing a nuclear umbrella” in the area and end the exercises with South Korea.
In this sense, he assured that “there is a lot at stake” on the Korean peninsula, where there is “growing hostility” in the face of the “dangerous threat” from Washington, according to information from the Yonhap news agency.
“The United States is desperate to spread false information internationally with which it seeks to demonize the North Korean government with absurd comments about the threat we supposedly pose to global peace and security,” he said.
Likewise, he has urged the United States to lead nuclear disarmament and finally suspend the shipment of nuclear technology to third countries. For him, the ballistic tests carried out during the last month by Pyongyang constitute mere exercises that seek to “test the defense capabilities” of the Asian country against possible attacks, a “basic right” even included in the United Nations Charter.
“Under these unavoidable circumstances, we are obliged to organize military rehearsals and maneuvers to review the state’s military capabilities (…) and alert enemies,” he maintained.
His comments come after the latest missile launches carried out by Pyongyang, which has pointed to the deployment of foreign joint forces (such as the aircraft carrier ‘US Ronald Reagan’) to justify these measures.
