North Korea destroys roads connecting to South Korean territory

MADRID 15 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The South Korean Army reported this Tuesday that the North Korean authorities have detonated the roads that connect both countries, after Pyongyang recently announced the “permanent” closure of their common border, understanding that they are symbols of inter-Korean cooperation.

“North Korea has detonated parts of the Gyeongui and Donghae roads, north of the Military Demarcation Line around noon,” reads a statement from South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reported by the Yonhap news agency, adding that has strengthened its vigilance and preparedness posture.

This measure comes amid rising tensions, including the launching of hundreds of balloons carrying propaganda and garbage against their respective territories. Seoul also resumed propaganda broadcasts through loudspeakers on the border in June for the first time in six years, as well as its live-fire maneuvers near the border, while carrying out various joint military exercises with the United States.

North Korean authorities have increased their launches of ballistic missiles and other projectiles, in what they describe as a warning against Seoul’s actions. Both countries are still technically at war because the Korean War (1950-1953) did not end with a peace agreement, but with an armistice, without the parties having so far been able to reach an agreement to officially end the hostilities. .
