The North Korean government has conducted “strategic cruise missile” firing exercises in an effort to demonstrate the country’s “nuclear combat strength” in the event of a counterattack.
A subunit of the North Korean People’s Army’s cruise missile unit has conducted training with four ‘Hwasal-2’ missiles, in the northeastern city of Kim Chaek, aiming towards the Sea of Japan, according to The KCNA agency has reported.
According to Pyongyang, the drill reconfirms the reliability of the North Korean weapons system in the “rapid response” of strategic cruise missile units, which would constitute “one of North Korea’s main nuclear deterrent forces.”
“The drill clearly demonstrated once again the war posture of North Korea’s nuclear combat force, reinforcing in every way its deadly nuclear counterattack capability against hostile forces,” read the letter released by the aforementioned agency.
The North Korean drills come days after the United States conducted military drills with at least one nuclear-capable B-1B strategic bomber and other military aircraft from both South Korea and Japan in response to a ballistic missile launch. intercontinental by North Korea last Saturday.
