North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui accused the G7 of interfering in the country’s internal affairs on Friday, alleging that the group has no authority to comment on “the national status” of the country.
“They made a statement full of extremely interventionist and improper content, maliciously slandering the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) about the legitimate exercise of its sovereignty,” reads a statement collected by the KCNA agency.
The North Korean diplomat has asserted that, if the G7 shows any attempt to attack the interests of the country, “it will be completely deterred by means of an energetic counteraction”.
“Taking this opportunity, I politely remind the G7 foreign ministers once again that the DPRK is free from any Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) obligation as it legally withdrew from the treaty 20 years ago,” the minister said.
Thus, Choe has indicated that the actions taken by the North Korean authorities “to reinforce its self-defense military capabilities constitute a fair exercise of its sovereignty to deter the threat of the unstable security environment caused by the reckless and provocative military maneuvers of the US and its allies.” “.
In this sense, he added that the objective is “to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country and to control and manage the situation on the Korean peninsula in a stable manner.”
“We will continue to take action steps based on all legal rights accorded to a sovereign state until the military threat from the US and its hostile allied forces is completely removed and the hostile environment besetting the independent existence and development of our country,” the letter continues.
The G7 foreign ministers in a joint statement condemned the recent “unprecedented” ballistic tests carried out by Pyongyang, calling them “illegal”.
“These launches violate United Nations Security Council resolutions and provoke an increase in destabilizing rhetoric regarding nuclear weapons, while undermining regional stability and posing a serious threat to international peace,” they asserted.
Thus, they demanded that North Korea “avoid taking destabilizing measures, which includes carrying out more nuclear or ballistic tests with this type of technology.” “These actions must be met with a swift, united and robust response from the international community, including taking meaningful action by the UN Security Council,” they added.
