Ninth Ministerial Conference on the Information Society of Latin America and the Caribbean will be held in Chile

Authorities from the region and key actors from the private sector, civil society, technical community and international organizations will participate on November 7 and 8, 2024 in the Ninth Ministerial Conference on the Information Society of Latin America and the Caribbeanalso known as eLAC, a body dependent on the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), which will take place in Santiago, Chile.

During this intergovernmental meeting, the new Digital Agenda for Latin America and the Caribbean will be adopted, which will guide the future of the region for the next two years (eLAC2026). The implementation of the previous Digital Agenda (eLAC2024) and the agreements approved during the meeting will also be examined. Eighth Ministerial Conference on the Information Society of Latin America and the Caribbean held in 2022 in Uruguay.

At the event, ECLAC will present the position document Overcoming the development traps of Latin America and the Caribbean in the digital era: the transformative potential of digital technologies and artificial intelligence, which analyzes how the region can face the challenges of development through digital transformation and artificial intelligence (AI).

A special session will also be held dedicated to the presentation of the “Digital Transformation Policy Laboratory” as a key space for innovation and collaboration, designed to provide countries with the necessary tools to improve and guide the formulation of their digital transformation policies.

Subsequently, five debate panels will be held in which various aspects related to i) digital governance and institutionality for the digital era and AI, ii) the role of digitalization and AI in the creation of a more productive future for the region, iii) the role of digital technologies as instruments of inclusion and empowerment, iv) digital security and data management as key elements for digital transformation, and v) cooperation and strategic alliances for a effective digitization.

The Ministerial Conference will be held within the framework of the so-called “Digital Week of Latin America and the Caribbean”, since on November 5 and 6 the High Level Dialogues of the European Union-Latin America and the Caribbean Digital Alliance on Artificial Intelligence and Connectivity, organized by the Government of Chile and the European Union.
