The first game first-party Nintendo Switch is getting a second-half release is Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, which is already available via the eShop for €29.99. The Deluxe Set, a physical edition, is priced at €59.99 and includes a replica of a gold cartridge, 13 illustrated cards, five pins and a game card. Another option is to import the standard Japanese edition in physical format.

The origins of the Nintendo World Championships date back to 1990, when the Japanese company organised the first edition of a world championship where participants had to get the highest score in a series of custom minigames based on existing titles such as Super Mario Bros. Today this cartridge is a prized commodity, while this type of event was a precursor to esports. Since then, two more championships have been organised (2015 and 2017) and some related games have been released.

In Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition players participate in events speedrun against players from around the world. The collection includes over 150 challenges that involve setting a record at various moments in classic titles. It’s not about beating a game, but rather beating as quickly as possible short challenges that can be completed in seconds, longer levels, boss fights and entire stages. The repeatable challenges come from 13 NES titles, listed below:

  • Balloon Fight
  • Donkey Kong
  • Excitebike
  • Ice Climber
  • Kid Icarus
  • Kirby’s Adventure
  • Metroid
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Super Mario Bros. 2
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition players can compete from home against the world on online leaderboards, or organize local championships with individual challenges or themed sets in Party Mode. Either way, before starting a challenge, you’ll be shown a video showing the route to follow and the objective to complete. If you fail, the action automatically rewinds, but the timer doesn’t stop. Alternatively, you can ignore the rewind and replay the challenge instantly. For those looking for a more challenging experience, there are Legend-level challenges with longer, more complicated routes.
