Niger’s military junta withdraws the nationality of two followers of former president Mohamed Bazoum

MADRID Jan. 7 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The coup leader of Niger, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, announced this Monday the temporary withdrawal of nationality from two Nigerien citizens known for their support of former president Mohamed Bazoum, overthrown in the coup d’état carried out in July 2023 by the current leader of the country, for allegedly spreading “disturbing” and “xenophobic” content.

The measure affects Maman Sani Ali Adam and Boussada Ben Ali, who have been accused of carrying out activities that “attack public peace”, including “the dissemination of disturbing content and racist and xenophobic comments.”

Tchiani signed a similar decree in early October in which he withdrew the nationality of nine officials of former President Bazoum, including the former Tuareg rebel leader Rhissa Ag Boula, who was Minister of State and advisor to the Presidency; several generals and the former ‘number two’ in the cabinet, Djibo Takoubakoye; accusing them of being involved in acts of terrorism.

The Nigerien authorities have stated that this measure is related to an order signed at the end of August last year that allowed the creation of a national file with the names of people or entities involved in “acts of terrorism or any other crime that affect the strategic interests” of the country or “could seriously disturb public tranquility and security.”
