Nigerian president-elect announces legal team against fraud allegations

March 4 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Nigerian President-elect Bola Tinubu has formed a legal team to deal with fraud lawsuits brought by his two main opponents, Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP); and Peter Obi, of the Labor Party, against his victory in last week’s elections.

The main opposition parties in Nigeria on Tuesday demanded a rerun of the elections, maintaining that the elections are “irreparably compromised” and denouncing a manipulation of the results due to delays in the publication of the minutes on the Internet.

As a first measure, Tinubu’s team will present a legal initiative against Obi, who will be accused of inventing his own vote estimates, according to the Nigerian newspaper ‘Vanguard’.

The party’s Communication Policy adviser, Dele Alake, has targeted Obi in particular, saying he has aspirations to become Nigeria’s “most dangerous politician”.

“He raised his well-known clan mentality to a very unfortunate level by openly basing his campaign on religion and ethnicity, when in reality he has ended up being the ‘poster boy’ for division in our country,” Alake said.

However, Alake has thanked with a certain sarcasm the opponents who have abandoned their initial calls for popular mobilization.

“I want to thank them for finally betting on the rule of law instead of the initial belligerent stance on their way during a baseless journey in pursuit of a mirage,” he added.

Tinubu will succeed Muhammadu Buhari, who was unable to run because he has already served the term limit set by the Nigerian Constitution.

The elections have marked the first time since the return of the country to civilian rule in 1999 in which none of the candidates is a former military leader, as was the case with Buhari, who already led the country between December 1983 and August 1985 after a coup.
