The Government of Niger has summoned the Algerian ambassador to the country to protest the mistreatment and expulsions of Nigerien citizens in the North African country. Algiers has adopted a reciprocal measure and has stressed that its actions comply with current legislation.
Specifically, Niger denounces violations of the human rights of Nigerien citizens in southern Algeria and the intensification of expulsions of sub-Saharan immigrants, including some who had residence permits.
“Massive police raids have occurred on a regular basis in the city of Tamanraset, where many sub-Saharan citizens live, including Nigerien citizens,” the Nigerien Government denounced in a statement denouncing “looting by the Police, who have confiscated valuables.” in home searches. On Saturday, the Nigerien ambassador in Algiers, Aminou Malam Manzo, was summoned to the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The sub-Saharan diplomat was received by the general director for Africa, Selma Malika Haddadi, who told him that “certain judgments have been made that Algeria considers unfounded.”
