July 14 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Niger authorities have announced the deaths of more than 20 suspected terrorists in a joint operation with Burkina Faso forces in an area located near the common border, as part of the fight against jihadism in this area of the African continent.
The Nigerian Ministry of Defense has indicated that “during a mixed operation by the Burkina Faso Armed Forces, armed individuals laid an ambush (…) which was vigorously repelled.”
Thus, he has stated that a total of 22 “assailants” were “neutralized”, while at least four soldiers were injured, without the Burkina Faso authorities having ruled for now on what happened.
Western Niger faces a terrorist threat in the west from the Al Qaeda branch in Mali, the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (JNIM), and the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS).
Likewise, the Diffa region, bathed by Lake Chad, is the scene of relatively frequent attacks by Boko Haram and its offshoot, the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA).
