Nicaragua has withdrawn this Tuesday the placet of the new ambassador of the European Union in the country, Fernando Ponz, after the EU denounced in a statement the “systematic repression” of the Government of Daniel Ortega on the anniversary of the start of the 2018 protests .
“Faced with his interventionist, daring and insolent statement of this day, which ratifies the imperialist and colonialist positions that characterize the European Union (…) Nicaragua has decided to suspend the pleat that had been granted to Mr. Fernando Ponz”, he indicated in a statement by the Foreign Minister, Denis Moncada.
In this sense, Moncada has expressed his “condemnation” against the “historical genocide” committed by the European Union at the same time that he has demanded “justice and reparation” against its “crimes against humanity and its virulent, greedy and rapacious looting”. of his riches, has collected the newspaper ‘La Prensa’.
Shortly before, the EU External Action Service, headed by Josep Borrell, recalled that on April 18, 2018, thousands of people “took to the streets to express their legitimate demand in favor of Human Rights, in particular the rights civil and political, and to demand the return of democracy”.
Instead of “listening and respecting” their demands, the Ortega regime opted for repression, which is why the EU continues to call for the release of “all political prisoners” and the “full return of the rule of law” in the country. Central America, where dozens of organizations have also been closed.
“The EU has regularly encouraged the Nicaraguan government to initiate an authentic and inclusive dialogue with the population regarding their legitimate demands,” said Borrell’s office, which has offered to collaborate in efforts to achieve “a democratic, peaceful solution and negotiated”.
The 2018 protests lasted until September and led to an escalation of repression that in subsequent years resulted in more than 200 arrests of people contrary to the government’s thesis. The UN estimates that, since December 2018, more than 3,100 organizations have been closed.
