May 27. (EUROPA PRESS) –

A group of NGOs have joined their voices to demand that the countries of the UN Security Council intercede so that Israel applies the precautionary measures dictated by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in relation to the offensive in the Gaza Strip and which involve, among other things, the cessation of the offensive on Rafá.

“Immediate action is required to comply with International Law and ensure that the Government of Israel meets its obligations,” said these organizations, including the Norwegian Refugee Council, Oxfam, Doctors of the World and Plan International.

Despite the rulings of the ICJ, which are mandatory, “the massacre has continued,” NGOs have stressed, giving as an example the latest attack on a displaced persons camp that has left more than 40 victims. The UN Charter provides that, if Israel persists in its defiance, South Africa, as a complainant country before the ICJ, can request the intervention of the Security Council.

“We call on the Security Council to take decisive action to ensure that ICJ orders are implemented, humanitarian aid is allowed to be delivered to those in need, and investigations into violations of international law are ensured,” the note reads.

In this sense, they have warned that inaction not only puts lives in danger in Gaza but also undermines confidence in the primacy of International Law, although in practical terms a possible intervention by the United Nations Security Council seems distant given that the United States, Israel’s key ally, has the right to veto.
