New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to resign

New Zealand reopening

() — New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on Thursday local time that she will resign by February 7. The president maintained that she does not believe that she has the energy to try to be re-elected in the October elections.

“As the end of the year approached, I thought I really needed to take the summer off to really consider whether or not I have what it takes to continue,” he told a news conference. “Once I realized that wasn’t the case, I knew there was unfortunately no alternative to resigning now.”

Ardern added that he expects a new prime minister to be sworn in on February 7, although “depending on the process, that could be sooner. So that’s something I’ll work on with the new leader.”
