New York, in a state of emergency as prevention against polio

First modification:

The territorial governor declared a state emergency this Friday, after samples of the virus were found in three counties on the periphery of that domain. The samples were found after the first case of the disease was detected in a person last July. The measure tries to prevent the spread of the virus.

A state of emergency for a disease that has not been heard of in a long time in the United States: polio.

The Governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, launched a State Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan through an executive order, with the aim of authorizing the necessary state agencies to take measures that help fully control the effects that may be generated. .

One of the fundamental aspects of the plan is the reinforcement of vaccination campaigns against the condition. Expanding the number of people authorized to inoculate the drug is one of the proposed measures.

The signing of the order by the territorial representative occurred weeks after the detection of the first case in an adult person and, according to the document, the samples of the disease had been collected since April, which shows that the disease was present before the location of the patient in the month of July.

The emergency will be valid for one month.

The call of the local government to inoculate

After the appearance of the first case, local officials made a call to receive the vaccine. The disease can affect anyone, but it mainly targets children from zero to three years old.

State figures reveal that 86.2% of children between the ages of six months and five years have received three doses of the vaccine in the metropolitan area.

Two of the counties affected by the virus have a lower vaccination rate. Rockland, with 60.34% and Orange, with 58.68%.

international campaign against polio

In 2000, the World Health Organization launched a worldwide campaign with the goal of eliminating the condition. However, more than twenty years later, cases continue to be reported, mainly in African and Asian nations.

In recent months, some cases have been detected in Israel, Ukraine and in June outbreaks were detected in the city of London.

In particular cases, polio can cause irreversible paralysis. Although there is no known cure, the vaccine has been applied since 1955.

To achieve high immunity against the virus, at least three vaccinations are needed.
