New RTX IO technology offers faster texture decompression



NVIDIA has finally revealed its new RTX IO technology during this week, which he first announced when Ampere launched back in 2020. However, it was not officially supported by any game until now, which the company has released Portal: Prelude RTX on Steam, which is part of a showcase of NVIDIA technologies.

The game is a fan favorite of the mod community and takes place before the adventures of the original Portal, and NVIDIA says RTX IO can drastically reduce texture load times in supported games by allowing the GPU to handle the task instead of the CPU.

It works as a plugin for DirectStorage, so it only works on titles that support Microsoft technology, and the company first announced it when Microsoft announced that DirectStorage would be coming to PC, Well, until now DirectStorage was a technology basically exclusive to consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

In principle, these technologies should eliminate texture pop-in, where sometimes we can see high quality textures replace low quality ones in the middle of the game due to insufficient charging speed.
