A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 shook Mexico in the early hours of this Thursday, September 22. The quake came just three days after a 7.7 earthquake, which also killed two residents and damaged more than 3,000 properties.
The earth shakes again in Mexico. The country experienced its second major earthquake in less than a week.
Around 1:00 a.m. this Thursday, September 22, an earthquake of magnitude 6.9 was recorded, with an epicenter in the western state of Michoacán, near the Pacific coast, and with a depth of 24, 1 kilometer, indicated the United States Geological Survey.
The authorities confirmed the death of at least two people in the midst of the earthquake: a woman after falling from the stairs of her home and a man who suffered a heart attack. At least three other residents were injured.
The new tremor aroused the panic of thousands of inhabitants in the center and west of the country, at a time when buildings swayed. Michoacán, Colima, Jalisco, Guerrero and Mexico City were the most affected localities.
“Fortunately there was no major damage, of course the loss of two people here in Mexico City is regretted, a lady who fell and hit her head, died. And another person who died, according to the report of the Government of the City (from Mexico), due to a heart attack,” President Andrés Manuel López Obrador declared at his morning press conference.
The president added that in the rest of the nation there is “minor material damage.”
The regional government of Michoacán pointed out that the earthquake was felt throughout the state and reported damage to a building in the city of Uruapan and some landslides on the highway that connects the region and Guerrero with the coast.
Second earthquake in less than a week in Mexico
The earthquake shook a country that has not yet finished recovering and assessing the damage from the 7.7-magnitude earthquake recorded last Monday, September 19.
That telluric movement, which left two citizens dead, occurred on the anniversary of the 1985 earthquakes, with a balance of around 10,000 deaths, and that of 2017 in which 369 people lost their lives.
Last Monday’s earthquake was recorded just less than an hour after the country’s inhabitants participated in the annual drill to prevent further damage due to strong movements of the earth’s crust.
The epicenter was the same as the one presented this September 22, the state of Michoacán, in the west of the Mexican territory.
“Those who were working to expand now, due to this replica, the evaluation work and already have a more attached knowledge of what is needed to help, are going to stay there,” López Obrador promised.
Being in interaction with five tectonic plates, the North American, the Cocos, the Pacific, the Rivera and the Caribbean plate, Mexico is a country located in an area of ”high seismicity”, experts explain.
