New confrontation in Ecuadorian prison leaves 13 dead

A total of 13 prisoners died on Monday in a prison in the interior of Ecuador after a riot and a fight between inmates, reported the Service for Persons Deprived of Liberty.

On its Twitter account, that institution said that “with the support of the police and armed forces, control of the Santo Domingo Detention Center is retaken. Unfortunately, Center staff reports at the moment 13 deceased prisoners and two injured.

He had previously indicated that a fight between inmates had been recorded in that detention center, but without giving more details.

Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas is located 70 kilometers southwest of the capital.

Since 2021 around 370 people have been brutally murdered in the prisons of the countryconverted into a scene of dispute between mafias of national and international drug traffickers and criminals who dispute territories and routes for this illegal business.

The Service for Attention to Persons Deprived of Liberty is responsible for 65 prisons throughout the country, where nearly 36,000 inmates are held, 17% above the maximum capacity of the system.
