The Armed Forces of Mali (FAMA) have reported in a statement of new clashes with members of the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (EIGS) for control of the strategic town of Talataye, in the Gao region, in the extreme east of the country. .
The Malian Armed Forces’ operation ‘Maliko’ is taking place in several areas: in the east, in the regions of Gao, Ménaka and Kidal, with headquarters in the city of Gao, and in the center, in the regions of Ségou, Mopti, Timbuktu and Taudénit as an area of action and base in Sévaré, the capital of Mopti.
The Gao region is located in what is known as the ‘three border area’, as it borders Burkina Faso and Niger. This region of the country has been particularly shaken by jihadist attacks in recent years.
In recent months, Mali has been registering a growing number of jihadist attacks carried out by both the Al Qaeda branch in the region and the Islamic State branch, which has also increased inter-community violence and caused the displacement of tens of thousands of people.
