Netherlands will bring forward releases to relieve pressure on prisons

AMSTERDAM Dec. 5 (DPA/EP) –

The Government of the Netherlands has announced that starting next week it will bring forward the release of prisoners to relieve pressure on the prison system, as it currently does not have the capacity to accommodate new inmates.

The Deputy Minister of Justice, Ingrid Coenradie, explained before Parliament that the idea is to advance the releases by three days, with the possibility of extending it up to a week. Nor does it “rule out” that some prison sentences imposed will be completely repealed if the situation is not resolved.

Coenradie has argued that, before adopting these measures, the Government has already exhausted the rest of the options and has warned that even the cells in the Police stations are full. In fact, in some cases the serving of sentences is already being suspended.

Years ago, the situation was different, as there were in fact too many free cells and authorities in the Netherlands chose to close some facilities.
