Netherlands leaves the door open for Netanyahu to visit the country despite the ICC arrest warrant

MADRID 29 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Dick Schoof, left the door open this Friday for the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, to visit the country under specific circumstances despite the arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC).

“We would have to see how we act if the Prime Minister of Israel visits the Netherlands. There are possible scenarios, also within International Law, in which he could come to the Netherlands without being arrested,” Schoof said at a press conference.

The Dutch Prime Minister has not gone into assessing what these assumptions would be, although he has highlighted that the Netherlands “abides by the obligations derived from the signing of the treaty on which the International Criminal Court is based.”

This comes after Schoof assured last Friday that the Israeli prime minister could visit the Netherlands to attend, for example, a meeting of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), based in The Hague. , without being arrested.

Schoof’s words would thus qualify the forceful statements of Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp, who assured that if Netanyahu sets foot on Dutch soil he would be arrested by virtue of the ICC decision, which also affects his former Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant.

The arrest warrants were issued against Netanyahu and Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity perpetrated within the framework of the military offensive launched more than a year ago against the Gaza Strip in response to the attacks carried out on October 7, 2023. by Hamas and other Palestinian factions.
