Authorities in the Netherlands and Denmark began sending US-made F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine on Wednesday, with a view to them starting operations in Ukraine this summer.

US President Joe Biden, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Shoof and his Danish counterpart Mette Frederiksen have indicated in a joint statement that the two European countries are immersed in the process of delivering these aircraft with the support of the United States.

“The transfer has already begun and Ukraine will be able to observe flights of these F-16s this summer,” the statement said, without offering further details for security reasons. The statement also took the opportunity to “thank Belgium and Norway for their commitment,” as well as other members of the air force coalition created to deliver this type of aid to Ukraine as the Russian invasion progresses.

“We are committed to increasing Ukraine’s air capabilities, including delivering squadrons of this modern fourth generation of F-16 aircraft. The coalition aims to build up the weapons and train pilots to achieve operational effectiveness on the ground,” they stressed.

In this regard, they have maintained that they will continue “coordinating their actions” to boost Ukraine’s capacity to defend itself “against Russian aggression.”
