Netflix is changing its subscription strategy again and now it is Spain’s turn to take centre stage. The streaming platform has just announced that users of the standard plan with ads will be able to add an extra member to their accountThis innovation, which is currently a pilot test in our country, could be extended globally in 2024.
What does this mean in practice? If you have Netflix’s cheapest plan, which currently costs €5.49 per month and includes advertising, you can now share your account with someone who doesn’t live with you for an additional €4.99 – almost a euro saved by the other person, which, if split between two, would come to €5.24 per person per month.
Of course, it’s worth mentioning that this change is not a coincidence. This change comes after the company decided to put an end to uncontrolled shared accounts. The reason was clear: more than 100 million people were watching Netflix for free, and the company was not happy about it.
Until now, only the most expensive plans – the standard and premium – allowed you to add extra members for a fee. With this test, Netflix opens the door for more people to legally share accounts, even if it is on the cheapest plan with ads..
If it works in Spain, it is likely that they will include it in other countries with ad-supported plans.
In general terms and to give you an idea of how things are now, This is what Netflix’s plans would look like:
- Standard with ads for 5.49 euros per month: with advertising, Full HD quality (1080p), allowing playback on two devices at the same time. Allows you to add an extra member for 4.99 euros per month (it is being tested).
- Standard for 12.99 euros per month: no ads, Full HD quality (1080p), allowing playback on two devices at once. Allows you to add an extra member for 5.99 euros per month.
- Premium for 17.99 euros per month: no ads, 4K+HDR quality, up to four simultaneous devices, and the possibility of adding up to two extra members for 5.99 euros each.
Why is Netflix doing this? It seems like they want to kill two birds with one stone. On the one hand, they get more people to use the ad-supported plan, which allows them to make money from advertising. On the other hand, they still charge for account sharing, even if it’s a little less than on the ad-free plans. A great strategy indeed.
