With these claims, the rumors are consolidated as a strategic plan by Netflix to generate income through advertising, after a drop of 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter of 2022.

So far, subscription levels range from $9.99 to $19.99 on average around the world, but it’s not yet known what the rate will be with the new ad-supported plan.

Last week, Netflix laid off 300 more workers, after cutting 150 contributors in May. The layoffs are part of attempts to cut costs amid slow growth in the number of subscribers. Another plan, which is reported as failed, is the pilot test to charge an extra fee for sharing the Netflix password with people who live outside the same household, in countries like Peru or Chile.

In March, Disney+ also confirmed that it would be adding a new ad-supported subscription tier, starting in late 2022.
