Netanyahu convenes the Security Cabinet amid information on progress in the negotiations

MADRID Jan. 5 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has summoned the members of the Security Cabinet of the Israeli Government this Saturday at 5:00 p.m. amid speculation about possible progress in the negotiations for a ceasefire and the release of hostages held in the Gaza Strip.

An assistant to one of the ministers has confirmed the call to the newspaper ‘The Times of Israel’, although he has not confirmed that the agenda includes the issue of negotiations.

Israeli Army Radio has reported that the meeting, held at Netanyahu’s official residence, will include ministers Bezalel Smotrich, leader of the Religious Zionist Party, and Itamar Ben Gvir, leader of the Jewish Power party, both opposed to accessing a cease-fire.

Meanwhile, the head of the Mossad and main Israeli negotiator, David Barnea, plans to travel to Qatar this Monday to participate in the negotiations, according to the Israeli newspaper ‘Yedioth Aharonoth’.

This Sunday the Qatari newspaper ‘Al Arabi al Yadid’ published, citing Palestinian sources, that this Sunday is a “decisive day” for the Doha negotiations after the delegations managed to overcome the remaining obstacles. Sources cited by Israeli public television Kan point to progress over the weekend, but deny that there is an agreement in principle.
