Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has authorized a delegation of negotiators to travel to the Egyptian capital, Cairo, to continue indirect talks with the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in an attempt to achieve a possible ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
The office said in a statement reported by the Times of Israel that “all its demands” are in line with the May proposal, referring to the text presented by US President Joe Biden.
He also said that Israel “has not added anything” to the proposal, while Hamas has demanded “dozens of changes.” He also recalled that the “obstacle” to a possible agreement in the Palestinian enclave is the leader of Hamas in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar.
“(Netanyahu) is willing to go to great lengths to free the hostages who are so important to him, while preserving Israel’s security and preventing conditions that could allow Hamas to regain control of the Strip, threaten Israel and carry out more massacres like those on October 7,” he concluded.
Negotiations to try to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza have been jeopardized in recent hours due to the death of the head of Hamas’ political wing, Ismail Haniyeh, in an attack blamed on Israel and carried out in the Iranian capital, Tehran.
