Net imports of natural gas to Spain fall 18.1% in April

Net imports of natural gas to Spain reached 23,820 gigawatt hours (GWh) in April, which represents a decrease of 18.1% compared to the same month last year, according to data from Cores.

Specifically, imports made through gas pipelines skyrocketed (+1,002.4%), while LNG imports decreased, with a decrease of 46.1%.

In the moving year, net imports of natural gas to Spain stood at 316,814 GWh in the period, with a year-on-year drop of 10.5%.

Natural gas imports reached 26,756 GWh in April, with a decrease of 30.3% compared to the same month in 2023. 60.3% is imported as LNG and the remaining 39.7% through a gas pipeline.

By geographical area, only supplies from Europe and Eurasia increased year-on-year, which grew by 7.4%, while those from North America decreased, with a drop of 76.7%, and Africa (-14.0%). In April there were no imports from the Middle East, Central and South America or Asia Pacific.

By country, Algeria was the main supplier of natural gas to Spain in April, with 12,351 GWh and 46.2% of the total, followed by Russia -5,342 GWh and 20%- and Nigeria -2,682 GWh and 10.0 %-.

EXPORTS DOWN BY 68.5%.

Regarding natural gas exports, in April they stood at 2,937 GWh, decreasing by 68.5% compared to the same month in 2023. 70.8% was exported through gas pipeline and 29.2% Remaining % as LNG.

France was the main destination of exports, with 1,010 GWh and 34.4% of the total, followed by Morocco -780 GWh and 26.6%-. In the moving year, natural gas exports stood at 57,096 GWh, with a decrease of 28.3% year-on-year, 71.5% carried out by gas pipeline and the remaining 28.5% in the form of LNG.
