Oli returns to power with the mission of forming a unity government with the Nepali Congress after months of political instability
14 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Nepalese Communist Party leader KP Sharma Oli took over as prime minister on Sunday and will lead a unity government in pursuit of national stability after Friday’s failure to secure a vote of confidence in his predecessor, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, the latest in a series of political friction.
The communist leader, who is keen to strengthen ties with Beijing, will be formally sworn in on Monday, after which he will have a month to consolidate his promise of unity in a parliamentary majority.
Nepalese politics has been dominated for decades by a caste of veterans who have been embroiled in a constant succession of scandals and increasingly disconnected from a new generation of voters, according to experts at the East Asia Forum, and the country’s economic crisis has accentuated these differences.
If the talks are successful, Oli will rotate as prime minister alongside Sher Bahadur Deuba, the president of Nepal’s other major party, the Nepali Congress, until the 2027 elections.
The 72-year-old chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal – Unified Marxist-Leninist Party is returning to power for the fourth time with the mission of forming a majority bloc, which is currently feasible because his party has 79 seats to the Nepali Congress’s 88. Between them they have 169 seats, well over the 134 needed for that.
