The deputies of the Parliament and regional chambers of Nepal on Thursday appointed Ram Chandra Paudel, a member of the political alliance that governs the Asian country, as the country’s new president, making him the third head of state since it was abolished. the monarchy in 2008.
The legislators had to choose between the pro-government Paudel and the opposition Subash Chandra Nembang, but they finally opted for the first of them, which has obtained just over 33,800 votes. He has achieved more than double the support of his direct rival, according to the official results collected by ‘The Kathmandu Post’.
Paudel, a senior member of the Nepali Congress Party, also had the backing of other smaller parties, including Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s Communist Party. Nembang, on the other hand, came endorsed by the Communist Party of Nepal and various independent figures.
The term of the current president, Bidya Devi Bhandari, ends this Sunday. Nepal reserves a basically symbolic role for the Presidency in political terms, since the weight in decision-making falls on the Government.
