NOUAKCHOTT, 4 Jul. (DPA/EP) –
Mauritanian authorities have recovered the bodies of 87 migrants and rescued another 36 people alive off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean after the boat they were sailing in capsized due to strong winds in the area.
The boat is believed to be carrying more than 180 African migrants, most of them from Senegal and Gambia. According to the source, dozens of people are still missing and it is feared that the death toll could rise in the coming hours.
The boat capsized due to strong winds and waves off the town of Ndiago, located in the southwestern tip of Mauritania.
The European Union promised Mauritania at the beginning of the year financial aid worth 210 million euros to deal with migration and to be able to provide humanitarian aid to migrants. The agreement came amid a surge in migrant arrivals in the Canary Islands.
