Nearly 80 migrants who were trying to cross the English Channel to reach the United Kingdom were rescued

June 6 () –

This Thursday, the United Kingdom Coast Guard rescued nearly 80 migrants who were traveling in a boat when they were trying to cross the English Channel to reach British shores.

The rescue operation took place off the coast of the county of Kent, in the southeast of the country, after the boat suffered an incident when it was already a few kilometers from British territory.

At the moment, authorities have not provided data on possible fatalities or injuries. However, a Coast Guard spokesperson said several helicopters have been deployed from Lydd and Lee on Solent. Likewise, several lifeboats have left from Dover and Walmer to provide aid to those affected, according to information collected by the Sky News television network.

It is estimated that more than 125,000 migrants have arrived in the United Kingdom after crossing the English Channel in the last six and a half years. In total, more than 80,000 people have made this journey since the Government agreed to transfer migrants to Rwanda more than two years ago.

The number of people trying to reach British shores has increased since Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called early elections for July 4.

According to data from the Ministry of the Interior, 34 people made the trip on a single boat on Wednesday, bringing the total number of crossings so far this year to 10,779. The figure is 42% higher than that recorded last year at this same time.
