Nearly 40 dead as Typhoon Carina hits southwestern Philippines

Jul 29. (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least 36 people have died as a result of Typhoon Carina hitting the southwest of the Philippines, a meteorological phenomenon that has been joined by Tropical Depression Butchoy, which has also caused havoc in the area.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said in a statement that 14 of the fatalities have already been identified, all of which occurred during the monsoon season, a period that could extend into November.

The government agency is currently investigating the deaths of 12 other people, in addition to at least six injured and three people whose whereabouts are unknown.

It is estimated that a total of 4.5 million people have been affected, representing approximately 1.2 million families. The largest number of those affected are concentrated in Central Luzon.

In addition, some 90 schools across the country have been affected, as well as more than 20,000 farmers, who have reported damage to their agricultural products – damages amounting to 355 million Philippine pesos (about 5.6 million euros) – which has led the Government to distribute aid worth more than 3.4 billion pesos (about 53.6 million euros).
