At least 27 people died Wednesday when a passenger bus overturned in Oaxaca, authorities in that southern Mexican state reported.
The accident occurred at dawn in the town of Magdalena Peñasco, in the Mixteca region, when the vehicle overturned and fell into a ravine, indicated the Oaxaca government secretary, Jesús Romero.
After the accident, the vehicle was practically destroyed at the foot of a precipice about 20 meters deep. Next to him were several bodies covered with sheets and bedspreads, according to images shared by the Oaxaca state Highway Police.
“There are 27 people dead, 13 women, 13 men and a child (…) a year and a half old,” said Jesús Romero, Secretary of Government of Oaxaca, at a press conference.
Another 21 people were injured, 12 of them are in serious condition, Romero added.
“We deeply regret the accident that occurred in Magdalena Peñasco. Our government personnel are already working on rescue actions and providing all the support to the injured people. We send a hug and our condolences to the families of the deceased,” wrote the Oaxaca Governor Salomón Jara on Twitter.
In mid-May, a trailer and a van collided on a highway in the northern state of Tamaulipas, killing 26 people.
