The authorities of Iran have raised this Friday to 17 the total number of people killed in the province of Alborz (north) due to the intake of adulterated alcohol, a case that has also led to the arrest of nine people for their alleged role in the sale of these drinks.
The head of the provincial judicial apparatus, Hosein Fazli Harikandi, has specified that more than 140 people have been hospitalized due to the ingestion of this drink, while stressing that there is an investigation underway to clarify how it was produced and marketed, according to has picked up the Iranian news agency Tasnim.
The consumption of alcohol is prohibited in Iran, with penalties ranging from fines to even more severe ones, such as public reprimands. However, the alcohol is offered on the black market or is sometimes even produced at home, cases in which it usually contains methanol if the distillation process is not carried out correctly. This substance is toxic and can cause blindness or even death if large amounts are consumed.
