The designated president of the NATO Military Committee, Italian Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, will begin his mandate in mid-January 2025 when he succeeds Dutch Admiral Rob Bauer, allied sources have informed Europa Press.

Cavo Dragone, current chief of the General Staff of Italy, was chosen for the highest-ranking military position in NATO last September, although the organization accepted his intention to finish his term at the head of the Italian Army before assuming the position. as president of the Military Committee replacing Bauer.

The replacement is now expected to take place at the meeting of chiefs of staff on January 15 and 16, which will be the last chaired by Bauer. On the 17th, a special meeting will take place with NATO military representatives in which Cavo Dragone will take over, the sources consulted have indicated.

Precisely visiting Rome, the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, expressed this Tuesday his desire to begin working closely with the Italian admiral after highlighting that he will perform the highest military function within the Atlantic Alliance.

Rutte has valued the role of Italy, which hosts important NATO commands, such as that of the Joint Force in Naples and the Ground Surveillance force in Sigonella. He has also highlighted his presence in the NATO battalions in Hungary, Latvia and Bulgaria, which he heads, as well as his leadership in the NATO mission in Kosovo, KFOR.

The Chairman of the Military Committee is the highest military rank in NATO and works hand in hand with the Secretary General, the Atlantic Council and other Alliance bodies, serving as the main advisory voice on military matters. He represents the collective views of all NATO Chiefs of the Defense Staff and directs the agenda and discussions of the Military Committee.
