The new Secretary General of NATO, the Dutchman Mark Rutteconfirmed this Monday the arrival of North Korean soldiers to the Russian region of Kursk, which has been the subject of an incursion by Ukraine. Rutte warns that the growing military collaboration between Moscow and constitutes a “dangerous expansion” of the Kremlin’s war of aggression in Ukraine and represents a direct threat to security in Europe.
It was the president himself Volodymyr Zelensky which revealed on October 17, during the autumn European Council held in Brussels, North Korea’s plans to send up to 10,000 troops to fight Russia in its war against Ukraine. Information confirmed first by the United States and now by the Atlantic Alliance.
“Today I can confirm that North Korean troops have been sent to Russia and that North Korean military units have been deployed in the Kursk region“, Rutte announced after a meeting of the Atlantic Council, which brings together the ambassadors of the 32 member countries. At the meeting, a delegation from South Korea – a NATO partner country – reported on the growing participation of its neighbor in the Ukrainian war. Representatives from Australia, Japan and New Zealand were also present.
“The deployment of North Korean troops represents: first, a significant escalation of North Korea’s involvement in Russia’s illegal war; second, yet another violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions; and third, a dangerous expansion of Russia’s war“, denounced the head of NATO. The Atlantic Alliance asks Moscow and Pyongyang to “cease these actions immediately.”
“Deepening military cooperation between Russia and North Korea is a threat to both Indo-Pacific security and Euro-Atlantic security. “It undermines peace on the Korean Peninsula and fuels the Russian war against Ukraine,” Rutte maintains.
Kim Jong Un’s regime has already supplied Moscow millions of ammunition and ballistic missiles “which are fueling a major conflict in the heart of Europe and undermining global peace and security.” In exchange, the Kremlin is providing North Korea with military technology and other support to circumvent international sanctions.
At the same time, the NATO Secretary General alleges that “the deployment of North Korean troops to Kursk is also a sign of Putin’s growing desperation.” “More than 600,000 Russian soldiers have died or have been injured in Putin’s war, and he cannot sustain his attack on Ukraine without foreign support. “This is because Ukrainians are fighting back with courage, resilience and ingenuity,” he said.
For all these reasons, Rutte has defended that NATO allies must further intensify their military support for Ukraine.
