Nancy Pelosi hospitalized after falling during official trip to Luxembourg

Former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was hospitalized after “sustaining an injury” during an official engagement in Luxembourg, according to a spokesperson.

Pelosi, 84, was in Europe with a bipartisan congressional delegation to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. Her spokesman, Ian Krager, said in a statement that she is “receiving excellent treatment from doctors and health professionals” and will not be able to attend the rest of the events of her trip.

He did not describe the nature of her injury or provide additional details, but a person familiar with the incident said Pelosi tripped and fell while at an event with other lawmakers. The person requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the fall publicly.

Krager said Pelosi “hopes to return to the United States soon.”

Among those on the trip was Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, who posted on social media that he was “praying for a speedy recovery” for Pelosi. The two lawmakers were captured holding hands in a group photo Friday at the U.S. Embassy in Luxembourg.

“I am sorry that Speaker Emeritus Pelosi will not be able to join the rest of our delegation’s events this weekend, as I know how much she wanted to honor our veterans,” McCaul wrote in X. “But she is strong, and I am confident that He will be on his feet in no time.”

The former leader’s fall occurs two years after her husband Paul was attacked by a man with a hammer in their home in San Francisco, California. The man, who was sentenced in October to 30 years in federal prison, broke into her home looking for Pelosi.

Pelosi, who was first elected in 1987 and served as House speaker twice, left her leadership post two years ago but remained in Congress and was re-elected to represent her San Francisco district in November.

She has remained active in the two years since leaving the top job, working with Democrats privately and publicly and attending official events. Last summer, he was instrumental in his party’s behind-the-scenes effort to urge President Joe Biden to leave the campaign trail.

He attended the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington last weekend and was on the Senate floor on Monday to attend the inauguration of his former House Democratic colleagues, Adam Schiff of California and Andy Kim of New Jersey. .

Earlier this week, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, 82, tripped and fell on the Senate floor, spraining his wrist and cutting his face. McConnell, who will step down from his leadership role at the end of the year, missed Senate votes Thursday after experiencing some stiffness in his leg from the fall, his office said.
