Murder of a prosecutor in charge of femicides

First modification:

For the third time in five months, a magistrate has been shot dead in Ecuador. Prosecutor Edgar Escobar was assassinated in the city of Guayaquil by assassins. He was in charge of investigations into violent crimes in the country.

With our correspondent in Ecuador, Eric Samson.

Prosecutor Edgar Escobar was near his office in the city of Guayaquil when he was assassinated. Two suspects on a motorcycle were arrested shortly after in the Santa Ana neighborhood.

The 43-year-old victim was a member of a unit of the Guayas region prosecutor’s office, in charge of investigating violent crimes, including femicides.

The motive for the crime is not yet known, but it probably has something to do with the victim’s job. Escobar was also in charge of the Penitenciaría del Litoral, in Guayaquil, the most violent in the country.

There is no lack of potential reasons

He was also investigating a massacre in a prison in November 2021, drug trafficking groups and a corruption scandal at the Social Security Institute of the National Police.

Therefore, there is no lack of potential reasons, especially in Guayaquil, whose port is one of the main centers of cocaine exports to the United States and Europe.

While the state of emergency has been extended by the government until mid-October, Guayaquil has entered the list of the 50 most violent cities in the world with almost 1,000 murders since January.
