MSF rescues 51 migrants in international waters near Malta

The NGO Doctors Without Borders has rescued 51 migrants on Monday, including a woman and nine minors, in international waters near Malta.

“Our team aboard the GeoBarents has rescued 51 people, including a woman and nine minors, six of them unaccompanied. They have been found in distress in an unseaworthy wooden boat located in international waters in the area of ​​responsibility search and rescue (SAR) of Malta”, has published the organization on its Twitter account.

MSF has announced that those rescued are safe and that they are receiving care. In addition, they have reported the air support provided by the NGO Pilotes Volontaires, which is in charge of aerial observation in the central Mediterranean and that it took an hour and a half to locate the vessel.

According to data from the Missing Migrants project of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), so far in 2023 alone, 1,724 migrants have already died or disappeared on the Central Mediterranean route, of which 63 are minors.
