The NGO Doctors Without Borders (MSF) announced this Saturday in the Italian port of La Spezia the disembarkation of 336 men, women and children rescued from the waters of the central Mediterranean in operations carried out this week by its rescue ship ‘Geo Barents’.
As usual, MSF has complained about the remoteness of the safe port assigned by the Italian authorities. The great distance that separates the assigned ports from the rescue zones endangers the fragile health of the rescued people.

In a subsequent message, MSF calls on the responsible government, Italy in this case, to “make all possible efforts to reduce the duration of the survivors’ stay on the assistance ship in accordance with the Guidelines on the treatment of rescued persons.” at sea”.
“The decision to assign us such a remote port does not take into consideration the welfare of the recently rescued survivors. This has become common practice in Italy, despite its illegitimacy,” he added.
