The MrBeast team is pushing back against accusations that its reality competition show “Beast Games” seems like a literal Hunger Games, with a source telling The Post exclusively that they “recognize the need to improve.”
The world’s most popular YouTuber, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, has Being under fire again after several “Beast Games” contestants reported that they were deprived of food and medicine while They competed to win a grand prize of $5 million.
Speaking to The New York TimesOne contestant said: “We signed up for the show, but we didn’t sign up to not be fed or hydrated or treated like human beings.” Several contestants described a meal they received as only including a “small serving of cold oatmeal, a hard-boiled egg and some bits of raw vegetables.” Another person said they saw other contestants vomit, faint and be taken away on stretchers.
Now, MrBeast has spoken out: A source close to the production of “Beast Games” told The Post that some of the problems on set were due to a “lack of communication.”
In a statement provided to The Post, a spokesperson for MrBeast’s company said: “The filming of the MrBeast promotional video, which included over 2,000 participants, was unfortunately complicated by the CrowdStrike incident, extreme weather and other unexpected logistical and communication issues, which we are currently reviewing, but we are grateful that virtually everyone invited to Toronto for our upcoming production enthusiastically accepted our invitation.”
The spokesperson added: “We have reached out directly to 97% of the 2,000 people who attended for feedback, have launched a formal review of the process and have taken steps to ensure we learn from this experience and are excited to welcome hundreds of men and women to the world’s largest pageant in history.”
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a source close to production suggested to The Post that some of the hype is overblown and based on the idea that Team Beast doesn’t care about the well-being of “Beast Games” contestants.
“Anyone involved in a production of this size recognizes that something will inevitably go wrong, but there was such a small percentage of people affected and there were personalized calls to over 2,000 people to follow up, which shows how much Team Beast values each and every person,” they said.
“There were certainly some mistakes and they will be addressed in the future,” the source added.
“There were less than 1% of people complaining. Almost 100% [of the finalists] confirmed their participation in the royal show and hundreds more requested to be included on a waiting list.”
The source called the situation “unfortunate” and “definitely something to avoid in the future.”
As for claims that medication was not provided to contestants who needed it, the source said: “That was a miscommunication. There were local people who were temporarily brought into the production and who perhaps decided to have their own message, which was not in line with the official direction.”
According The Times reportSeveral contestants said they had not received their medications on time from production staff despite being assured that they would. Contestants were required to hand over all medications upon arrival.
One competitor said she was denied food when she needed it to take her medication, claiming that production staff told her she didn’t need to eat. She eventually said she was given half a banana.
The source close to the production of “Beast Games” insisted that the individuals involved in allegedly denying medication to contestants were not members of the official MrBeast team.
Regarding contestants who recalled that some of their fellow competitors were hospitalized, the source said there were “less than 10 hospitalizations,” which “included things like sprained ankles and bruised shoulders.”
The source added that local team members in Toronto will be given clear instructions on the protocol for interacting with contestants and that an investigation is underway into what went wrong in the first round of the competition.
