July 19 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Mozambican police have arrested and charged 98 people on Monday for “acts of disorder and vandalism” in the capital, Maputo, and in the suburb of Matola when they allegedly protested against the high cost of living.
The defendants have thrown sticks and stones at vehicles and bystanders and have burned tires with the intention of obstructing the main access roads, as reported by the Club of Mozambique news portal.
The spokesman for the Mozambican Police, Leonel Muchina, has said that the 82 people detained in the capital had 160 tires prepared to be burned or used to create obstacles with the aim of hindering the movement of people and goods, as reported by ‘ News’.
On the other hand, in Matola, 16 people have been arrested, including four minors for throwing stones at vehicles. The minors have been released after being made aware of the undesirability of this type of behavior, the spokeswoman for the local Police, CarmÃnia Leite, has indicated.
According to local media, hundreds of people participated in demonstrations last Thursday that were spread through social networks.
Mozambicans have complained about the rising cost of basic goods and claim that the government is not doing enough to prevent it.
