Mouse head or lion tail: the importance of Mexico for Latin America

Historically, Mexico has engaged in intense activism for Latin American causes, especially in high-level international forums, as well as a conciliatory attitude in relation to conflicts between states in the area. However, its geographical proximity and commercial dependence on the United States, among other factors, have caused the country to fall short of its potential, privileging economic interest over the political, cultural, and social ties it shares with its region. The new Government that will emerge from the elections on June 2 will have as one of its main challenges deciding on the future of Mexican foreign policy: closer to the United States or Latin America?
