Moscow says Stoltenberg supports the use of Western weapons against Russia because he will "leave office soon"

Kremlin criticises ‘angry words from Europe claiming that Russia is supposedly nothing to fear’

September 22 () –

The Russian presidency said on Sunday that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg’s defense of lifting restrictions on Ukraine attacking Russian territory with weapons supplied by its allies stems from the fact that he “will soon leave office.”

“He is a person who is on his way out. He will soon be leaving office. That is why he allows himself to make such irresponsible statements,” the Kremlin spokesman said in an interview with Russian television channel Rossiya 1.

“Unfortunately, I think that their attitude is shared by many in Europe. We have heard angry words from Europe saying that we supposedly should not be afraid of Russia or (Russian President Vladimir) Putin and that we should not take them seriously,” he stressed.

He also stressed that “there is a war going on” and that the goal of Ukraine and its allies is to achieve “a strategic and tactical defeat of Russia,” according to the Russian news agency Interfax. “For Russia, there has never been an alternative in history and there is no alternative to our victory now either,” Peskov said.

“This forces us to take a very serious stance, to carry out our actions taking into account the danger and to continue the special military operation – the name given by Moscow to the invasion of Ukraine – in order to achieve all our goals,” Peskov concluded.
