Moscow calls for ban on ICC activities in Russia after Putin's arrest warrant

The Chairman of the Russian Duma or Chamber of Deputies, Viacheslav Volodinasked this Saturday to prohibit by law the activities in Russian territory of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which issued an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“It is necessary to introduce changes in the legislation that prohibit any activity of the CPI in the territory of our country and also to study the responsibility for cooperating and supporting the CPI,” he wrote on his Telegram account.

Volodin, who as soon as the arrest warrant was issued described it as an “aggression” against Russia, also advocated signing bilateral agreements with friendly countries that contemplate “the mutual resignation to cooperate with the court of The Hague”.

In addition, he proposed that “the supreme commander”, that is, Putin, “have the right to adopt any action for the defense of Russian citizens in the event that international structures make decisions that contradict the norms of the Constitution of Russia”.

Volodin discussed plans for legislation in the lower house of Parliament on Friday during a meeting with Putin in the Kremlin.

In turn, he recalled today that since the controversial 2020 referendum the Russian Constitution includes a point that grants “priority” to national legislation over international ones.

“On Russian territory, the decisions of the International Criminal Courthe European Court on Human Rights and other puppet institutes that Washington use for their own interests,” he explained.

He recalled that the US adopted a law at the time that protects its military, so that none of them can be the object of an arrest warrant from the CPI, and that it can even initiate a military intervention in the event that a US citizen sits before that court

This Thursday the deputy head of the Russian Security Council and former president of the country, Dmitry Medvedevwarned that Putin’s eventual arrest would be tantamount to declaring war on Russia.

Ukraine this week signed an agreement for the opening of a representative office of the CPI, which, according to the president, Volodimir Zelensky, “will allow international justice to be even more active in the investigation of the crimes of the Russian army.”

The court considers Putin “presumed responsible” for the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children -a war crime for the CPI-, which has been denounced on numerous occasions by the Kiev authorities.
