The three most popular fighting games on consoles have started to get a makeover: Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter and Tekken. The first has participated in the Summer Game Fest 2023 with a special presentation with story content and gameplay. Ed Boom himself, co-creator of the franchise, took the stage to talk about what this installment represents for gamers and for the team behind it.
Mortal Kombat 1 will go on sale on September 19 of this year on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch. Normally, the Switch version usually arrives a little later, but this time the launch will be simultaneously on all consoles. Eager to play this fighting title? Well, you can now enjoy the first preview of the gameplay and part of the story.
During the mid-year event hosted by game journalist Geoff Keighley, NetherRealm Studios was among the first developers to introduce new content. As you can see in the trailer below, Liu Kang, the God of Fire, is recruiting fighters for a mission and first on the list are brothers Sub-Zero and Scorpion.
Mortal Kombat 1 Story
That’s right, the rivalry between the two characters has disappeared. This is because Mortal Kombat 1 will represent the reboot of the franchise with a renewed story. Ed Boom spoke about it during his participation in the online event that was broadcast on YouTube and Twitch.
“I don’t know how many have seen the ending of Mortal Kombat 11. Liu Kang has basically graduated into a God of Fire and created a new universe. And that’s why we call it Mortal Kombat 1, it’s the beginning of a new timeline where the characters you already know appear but have completely new stories. Sub-Zero and Scorpion are brothers now, some of the rivalries are now allies. we are mixing everything”, he detailed.
Of course, they could not get off the stage without making a special presentation of the most spectacular “fatalities” that come to the video game. In addition, they introduced the “cameo” mechanic, where you can choose your secondary fighter and add a cameo or a character from the franchise to have their movements.
It won’t exactly be a tag spot where a second wrestler can come in as a replacement, but a button press will add to your punch combo for added variety. This way, you can prevent your enemy from blocking or interrupting your combo and land many more hits.
